Tamil Rights Group is an international not-for-profit advocacy organisation based in Markham, Ontario, Canada , dedicated to advancing justice, accountability, and civil liberties for the Eelam Tamil community and other minorities affected by serious human rights violations. Overview Founded in 2020 , the Tamil Rights Group (TRG) brings together experienced advocates, legal experts, activists, and diaspora networks to strengthen global advocacy efforts for transitional justice and universal jurisdiction for Eelam Tamils — people of Tamil origin from Sri Lanka who have faced decades of conflict and human rights abuses. TRG’s work focuses on influencing international law and diplomacy, defending civil liberties, and creating platforms for civic engagement and legal recourse. Mission and Goals TRG’s mission is to: Achieve justice and accountability for violations committed against Eelam Tamils through legal avenues, including lawfare and international mechanisms. Ensure political, civil, and economic rights and protect human rights and freedoms for all targeted communities in Sri Lanka. Strengthen civic space and support local communities in developing meaningful political solutions. The organisation believes addressing past violations — through legal and diplomatic means — is essential to moving forward in a sustainable and peaceful way. Strategic Focus Areas TRG’s advocacy work centers on three core areas: Leveraging International Law – Using legal tools like universal jurisdiction to pursue accountability for serious crimes. Expanding Global Diplomacy – Building international support and partnerships to promote human rights, justice, and pluralism. Defending Civil Liberties – Supporting fundamental rights through legislative reform and establishing civil liberties mechanisms, including a civil liberties union within Sri Lanka.
