What to know
The father of Sulakshan Selvasingam, the 28-year-old Tamil tow truck driver from Pickering shot dead outside a Scarborough gas station on July 6, 2024, addressed a sentencing hearing at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto on Monday, delivering his victim impact statement in Tamil through an interpreter and saying he feels his son's loss 'every single day'. The teen who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in June was 16 at the time of the killing; the teen's identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Selvasingam was found with gunshot wounds near Warden Avenue and Ellesmere Road, and Toronto police described the death as a tow truck industry-related homicide.
According to the reporting, Crown lawyer Sharna Reid asked that the teen — who has already served two years — remain in custody for four more years, with the rest served under community supervision, saying the murder was planned and deliberate. Defence lawyer Sherif Foda asked for two more years in custody with double credit for time served so the now 18-year-old would not be transferred to an adult prison where rehab programs would be harder to access. The article notes the teen also pleaded guilty in June to 13 counts of reckless discharge of a firearm for shootings targeting GTA businesses between May and July 2024, none of which injured anyone. The judge's decision is set for later this month.
