What to know
TamilCulture reports on how the summer 'ondru koodal' has become a fixture of Tamil Canadian life: hundreds of home-village and alumni associations across the GTA — from groups like the Pungudutivu Old Students Association to past-pupil associations of Jaffna schools — spend summer days together in parks with food, cricket, volleyball, races, music and tug of war.
Earlier this summer, seven Tamil Students' Associations at Canadian universities organized 'Ooru Vittu Ooru Vandhu', a student ondru koodal that kept the games-and-food format and raised money to provide meals to homes in Jaffna, Batticaloa and Badulla. The organizers told TamilCulture the term 'ondru koodal' — 'uniting as one' — was intentional, and that their generation wants to carry the tradition forward for future students.
