What to know

Navaratnam began dancing at age 12, training and performing with Tamil dance groups and competing in events such as the Thaalam competition before the pandemic. After the pandemic he explored new styles through online hip-hop training and decided to pursue dance full-time.

He won a place in the World Cup opening-ceremony performance in Toronto after an audition process that drew around 600 dancers, with about 100 ultimately selected. Rehearsals ran almost every day over two weeks, including demanding outdoor practices under the summer sun.

The profile notes he has previously performed alongside major South Asian artists including Anirudh, and counts Prabhu Deva, Ravi Varma and Usha Jey among the dancers who shaped his art. His advice to young Tamils: "Just do it. It doesn't have to be just dance; it can be anything you are passionate about."
